Serena Williams is soaking up lots of praise and counting all of her money after securing her 18th Grand Slam win!
Let’s just start by saying that it was a really good Sunday to be Sunday!
The tennis pro won her third consecutive U.S. Open earlier today when she beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3, the Associated Press reports. This victory made her the first woman to win the title three times in a row since Chris Evert’s four-year run, which began in 1975.
We all know that Serena is a champion. That’s not to say that she doesn’t have to put in work to win as much as she does. Truth be told, this was a hard-won victory for Serena, who has had a tough season up until this point. She lost at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon before she had to exit a doubles match with her sister Venus due to a viral illness.
Determined to get to the top of her game again, Serena battled back at the U.S. Open to win all 14 sets that she played in during the tournament!
Along with the satisfaction of winning the U.S. Open, Serena earned a record $4 million for her victory! She got $3 million for the title alone and another $1 million for getting the best scores on the North American circuit.
Almost as soon as she swung her racquet for the final shot, people on social media couldn’t send her their congrats quickly enough! Nike was among the first to show her some love with a series of pictures commemorating her win.
